#11 My favs from Bafta 2024 and Princess Diana
What do the Bafta Awards 2024 and Diana, Princess of Wales have in common? My style analysis and lots of fashion tips to update your wardrobe.
BAFTA 2024: My favourite looks, but not that much
Bafta 2024 took place this week and the most enjoyable part of watching it is the red carpet, where the artists use the space to be photographed and make themselves stand out in the media due to their styling / look of the day.
I had already imagined that after we'd been through Paris Haute Couture Week, some of the pieces from the collections presented would appear. And it did.
I've listed a few looks, two of which were my favourites and the last one was a "wrong choice" made by singer Dua Lipa's fashion team.
EMILY BLUNT:
She wore a gorgeous Elie Saab Spring 2024 haute-couture embroidered dress paired to stunning embellishments from Tiffany. In my opinion as a stylist, the styling designed for the occasion was in harmony with the dress-code and really emphasised the actress.
The shiny embroidery brought sparkle to the opaque nude colour of Emily's fabric dress, while the cut-outs accentuated her waist, which is a part of her figure that she wanted to highlight with elegance.
The classic hairstyle and light make-up in shades of smoky pinkish brown brought a classic touch to such modern styling codes.
Another detail that caught my eye was the slightly smoky hair roots to balance out her personal contrast with the same colour eyebrows. This way she remains blonde with soft, natural features, harmonising with her skin-tone.
YOMI ADEGOKE:
Perhaps I've never seen such a harmonious combination of shades of red. The layers gave the actress lightness and personality, while the illuminated make-up meant that the dress was not the highlight, but the actress herself.
As Coco Chanel once said:
"It's not the clothes that dress us, we dress them"
Coco meant that an outfit shouldn't show more than ourselves.
Although Yomi looked beautiful, unfortunately I feel that the fabric of the dress was poorly cared, as it was clearly creased, which takes away from the nobility of the dress.
I also missed a ring to emphasise her hands, which are so present in the photographs. Perhaps the actress's fashion team could team up with a jewellery brand, as it would be good for the brand's marketing too. Something simple to propose that enriches the styling.
DUA LIPA:
It's painful for me to negatively criticise Dua Lipa's styling, because I'm a fan of hers.
Dua Lipa has cold skin and is possibly part of a seasonal winter wardrobe, which directly does not harmonise with a shade of red as bright as that of her dress. I'd venture to say that the red Dua is wearing at the moment doesn't enhance her skin either, in fact it makes her face look dull.
Perhaps a burgundy dress would add drama to the styling, as it would match her hair colour while maintain the visual contrast.
My aim with this content is not to negatively criticise the work of celebrity artists or the celebrities themselves.
The purpose of my professional analysis is to share my thoughts with you on how the styling of a special occasion can be thought out with or without attention to the details that matter.
Tell me what you thought of my choices and would you have any other artists to comment on?
WHAT DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES TAUGHT US ABOUT PERSONAL STYLE
Anyone who has been following me on Instagram for a while will already know about my admiration for Diana, Princess of Wales. Diana was a sweet woman, devoted to charity and a reference in personal style with basic and romantic codes.
Today I'm going to share with you some of the lessons in fashion and style co-ordination that she passed on to us throughout her life.
PEARLS:
Classic elements can be renewed depending on the combination of clothing. Diana was a fan of mini and small spheres to combine with romantic looks and emphasise her femininity.
For those who aren't fans of the classic linear pearl, nowadays you can find organic ones without a linear shape, which makes the jewellery more modern and fresh.
SHIRTS
The white shirt is a capsule wardrobe staple, but not necessarily the only one. The neutral pink colour with a light, pastel background goes well with different shades of clothing and adds sophistication to casual looks. If you're a fan of pink like me, go for it!
STATEMENT COAT
When it comes to autumn and winter in Europe, coats are an essential part of our routine, which is why they need to be bought with awareness and care. After all, it can make or break your look.
Have a statement piece for the days when you don't want to think too much about what to wear. That way you can throw it on and leave the house looking effortlessly chic.
BELTS
Diana was keen to wear a belt to emphasise her slim waist and repeated the item on different occasions, making it part of her signature style, just like mom jeans.
Wearing it with a blazer is something I love and always suggest to my clients for a "Dior silhouette" look.
Don't think that a high waist is something restricted to bodies like the Princess's, okay? Real people like you and me also look great when the whole outfit harmonises with our body shape.
WATCHS AND JELWERIES
Note that Princess Diana was in the habit of wearing a watch, whether it was a leather strap or a combination of gold and white gold.
However, Diana never wore a watch + bracelet on the same wrist, as she knew it could be "too much".
If you want a minimalist style, combining jewellery on one wrist and the watch on the other makes the styling cleaner. If it suits your taste, wear rings on both hands for a feminine classic that isn't too minimalist.
