#09 STOP SUITING MASSIVE STYLING TRENDS
When did we stop being self-critical and start accepting whatever truth they try to impose on us?
Today I'm reflecting on personal style versus mass trends that are created in "brand and celebrity laboratories" to sell more.
Is the authenticity of having our own style losing ground to mass trends, with the aim of fitting into groups that don't see us?
STOP SUITING MASSIVE STYLING TRENDS
With so many new style trends suddenly appearing after a video goes viral on TikTok or an artist is featured in the media, anyone with an authentic personal style becomes a fish out of water.
I have to admit that I'm tired of going on social media and fashion portals and seeing pages and pages of headlines saying that Mafia Woman is in, or Ballet Core, or Scandinavian. Even make-up has entered the box of ready-made styles. The make-up of the moment is cherry, or is it vanilla latte?
And I understand that it can be distressing to be overwhelmed with information like this when you're not sure what your personal style identity is, the one that makes you feel authentic when you're alone or in public. Does this happen to you? An easy way to reflect if you don't know the answer immediately is to think about how many clothes, shoes and accessories you've bought in the last year that no longer make sense to you.
When did we stop being self-critical and start accepting whatever truth they try to impose on us? When did we stop being inspired by ourselves and our closest friends and start coveting the style of celebrities and digital influencers?
As a style consultant, I value authenticity over homogenisation and I believe other people do too. I believe that my deeply trained eye, based on knowledge of fashion history, art history and culture, can be a good influence in building an image that meets our goals. Otherwise my profession would die out.
That doesn't mean we can't have celebrities and digital influencers as influences. For example, Lady Diana is a source of reference for my personal style, which is simple, quite feminine, but strong at the same time. Do you understand what I mean about being self-critical and knowing how to filter what is part of your essence and lifestyle?
I don't have any answers today, but I felt compelled to raise this issue here so that we can talk about how, in the age of the internet and artificial intelligence, we end up leaving the decision of our choices in the hands of others.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR VALENTINES’S DAY
Valentine's Day is just a few days away and do you already know what your plans will be?
I've curated a list of looks with two personal styles in mind to inspire you to dress for your loved one or for yourself:
The fancy woman is just the right amount of sensuality, sophisticated in her details and with a striking presence.
The cool girl is a fashionista who likes to create looks with different textures and fabrics for a dramatic look.
Which is more your style? In a personal styling consultation, I will guide you to identify your personal style to boost your self-esteem and highlight the powerful woman you are.
